The Cradle of The Game
Want to win the best football book known to man? Then pull up a chair. The Cradle of the Game is the work of a genius, namely Stuart Roy Clarke. "Clarke's love of the game is evident in the evocative, shamelessly nostalgic and absorbing images of place and people in this book" trumpeted The Guardian newspaper. "These mesmerising images will make you remember why you got into football in the first place" declared Sabotage Times. And they're not wrong...
Once you've been invited in through its red gated cover you'll spend hours marvelling at his visual dollops of humour, patriotism, self-deprecation, loyalty…and sense of occasion. "If you don't like these photos you probably don't like football" said European Football Weekends Editor Danny Last. (get on with it - Ed.)
You can see images from the book courtesy of The Guardian newspaper HERE.
For unbridled joy, tap the name of your team into the search engine on The Homes of Football website and hit enter - you'll be richly rewarded I promise.
To be in with a chance of winning the book (RRP:£35) just post a comment here or on the brand new European Football Weekends Forum, and I'll pick a winner out at random on Sunday July 17.
Great blog, great book. Awesome. Ask me when you are planning a trip to a match in Murcia or Pamplona!
ReplyDeleteClarke is a great photographer and for years I've admired his work, which now has a home at the National Football Museum in Manchester.
ReplyDeleteVisited the Home of Football in Ambleside last year. Well worth the visit and it was nice to see the pictures I have in his books in large print.
ReplyDeleteI never knew about Clarke's website, there are some wonderful pictures. Even a couple of Sutton United peaches! The classic photos of grounds no longer standing are also impressive.
ReplyDeletehey yo quiero mi libro! jaja
ReplyDeleteSome of Clarke's pics are the best photos I've ever seen.
ReplyDelete@Carlos - Thanks mate, I'm in Spain for two weeks in September, but I'm down south. I'm hoping to see Real Betis as well as a couple of other games.
ReplyDelete@Ollers, @Reynard The Fox, @Will Obeney and @Brucki - I agree with all of that.
@CementeroFC Voy a poner tu nombre para participar en el sorteo del libro. ;)
I've heard this is a fantastic book from many places. Love this blog, too. Lots of great stories.
ReplyDeleteI think it's probably only fair if this is the comment you pick out at , if you will , random to win the book.
ReplyDeleteCheers old chap.
You know where to send it.
Win this book? What are the chances of that? One in ten? Great blog!
ReplyDeleteOoooh I definitely am putting my name into this hat.
ReplyDeleteConsider my name into the hat. Presumably David Davies or Graham Kelly will be presiding over the draw.
ReplyDeleteI did the draw for the book this morning, and the first name out of the hat was Sebastiaan Weel. Great news for him, not so good for me as I now have to send a book that weighs about 50 kilos to Almelo in The Netherlands.
ReplyDeleteAll the names from here, and lots of others that entered on the new EFW forum (http://efwchat.co.uk) went into the hat.
Hopefully, there will be more competitions in the coming weeks. Thanks to all those who took part.
